Discover Things to Do in Vieques
When looking for things to do in Vieques, consider a day trip to see El Hombre de Puerto Ferro, or rather Puerto Ferro Man. In 1991, archaeologists uncovered the remains of a 4,000-year-old man along with other artifacts on the south side of Vieques. The remains were marked by a circling of massive boulders, with the mystery still unsolved if those boulders were there naturally or somehow moved to this spot by the ancient people.
Archaeologists speculate that the evidence indicates he was one of the Arcaicos, Puerto Rico’s earliest known inhabitants. This discovery identifies Vieques as one of the earliest known pre-Arawak stone age cultures in the Antilles, dating back as far as 500-2300 BC.
The remains have since been removed, and are now on display at Museo de Historia, Antropologia y Arte while the boulders remain today as an important archaeological site for visitors to see.
To get there from Hacienda Tamarindo follow a dirt road (for less than five minutes) that leads to the rocks from road 997, east of Esperanza.
