Vieques Island Activities
Known for its beautiful beaches and Mosquito Bay, Vieques Island is also home to beautiful lush hiking trails. Venture through green forests with breathtaking views that lead to quiet beaches for a one-of-a-kind hiking experience.
Reconnect with nature while on vacation with these Vieques hiking trails:
Hacienda Tamarindo to Black Sand Beach
Start your hike from Hacienda Tamarindo (near Esperanza Beach), follow the rugged shoreline dotted with giant granite boulders for about half a mile. Do note that during high tide the hike is a bit harder, requiring you to walk around rocks and small boulders.
If you choose to use the road, it’s a half mile walk along a country road to the trail entrance through the woods, leading to the beach.
Sugar Mill Ruins
Located on the western coast of Vieques Island are the ruins of Playa Grande Sugar Plantation. Once an operable sugar mill, the plantation closed in the 1940s and has since been designated a historic landmark. Explore its grounds, overgrown with lush tropical vegetation that hug the brick walls of the mill, by hiking one of the many trails that start at the road.
There are guided tours by the Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust that can be booked by calling 787-741-8850.
Esperanza to Cayo de Tierra
Access this trail from the beach in Esperanza. As you look towards the water, you will see two cays – Cayo de Tierra is attached to the shore. Keep to the left of the island, where you can continue and hike to the top of Cayo de Tierra for breathtaking views of the blue waters of Vieques.
Trails at the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge
Previously occupied by the U.S. Navy, the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge is now overseen by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife. At over 18,000 acres, it is the largest wildlife reserve in the Caribbean. The area offers some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Various trails meander throughout the wetland areas, one leading to a historic lighthouse.
