Vieques Island may be small, but it has a lot to offer its visitors! From scuba diving to horseback riding, there are plenty of activities to fill your adventurous spirit. Discover our favorite things to do on Vieques Island and start planning your island vacation with us today!
Bio Bay
One of the more unique things to do on Vieques Island is kayaking Mosquito Bay, the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world. The bio bay at Vieques Island is the area’s most popular attraction and is a must for anyone visiting Puerto Rico. Located at the southern shore of Vieques island, Mosquito Bay lights up at night with a blue glow from the half-plant, half-animal microorganisms that live below the water’s surface. The best time to experience this naturally occurring phenomenon is during a new moon, when there is less light emitted from the sky, making the microorganisms more visible.
While you cannot visit the bio bay Vieques unaccompanied, we suggest signing up for a tour. Aqua Sunset Tours provides completely clear kayaks to explore the Bio Bay. JAK Water Sports and Bieque Eco Trips provides clear bottom kayaks.
Horseback riding
Known as the island of wild horses, Vieques Island is home to about 2,000 Paso Fino horses. Visitors will find the horses strolling on the beach, grazing in fields and by the roadsides. Horseback riding is a great way to see a lot of the island in a short amount of time. Ride through lush tropical forests, free from the crowds on a secluded beach with your tour guide for an unforgettable adventure.
When you stay at Hacienda Tamarindo, peer out your room’s window, and you are likely to see a wild horse roaming in the outlying fields along with beautiful scenes of the Caribbean. It doesn’t get any more picturesque than that!
Snorkeling
For your Vieques island snorkeling adventures explore the colorful world below the ocean’s surface at almost any beach on the island. Snorkel over delicate reefs while you swim alongside schools of colorful fish for a truly one-of-a-kind experience you can only find on Vieques island.

Scuba Diving
Explore marine life under water with scuba diving. As a popular scuba diving destination in the Caribbean, the island of Vieques offers enjoyable diving conditions year-round. Enjoy comfortable water temperatures in the mid-70s and nearly 100 feet of visibility. Encounter multiple sea creatures such as sea turtles, manatees, dolphins, sting rays, and colorful reefs. While there are 16 scuba diving sites on Vieques, some of the most popular include Angel Reef, Isla Chiva, and Patti’s Reef.
Vieques Beaches
The Vieques Puerto Rico beaches have been widely recognized as some of the best beaches in the Caribbean. Feel instantly mesmerized by the beautiful azure-colored waters, white sandy beaches, and lush landscape – it is truly postcard perfect! While we are located on an island, with beaches all around us, each has its own vibe and unique appeal.
