Playa Grande Beach

While all the beaches on Vieques island are spectacular, Playa Grande Beach is perhaps the most scenic. Not ideal for sunbathing, Playa Grande draws you in with its dramatic landscape of rocky shores, crashing waves, and horses galloping nearby. From here, you can enjoy a nice long scenic walk to the Playa Negra, the black sand beach for even more impressive views. 

Or start your walk from Hacienda Tamarindo (near Esperanza Beach), follow the rugged shoreline dotted with giant granite boulders for about half a mile. Do note that during high tide the hike is a bit harder, requiring you to walk around rocks and small boulders to get to Playa Negra. 

Bio Bay

Probably one of the best views in Vieques, Puerto Rico is of the bioluminescent bay. Mosquito Bay is the brightest bioluminescent bay in the world and is the area’s most popular attraction and is a must for anyone visiting Puerto Rico. Located at the southern shore of Vieques island, Mosquito Bay lights up at night with a blue glow from the half-plant, half-animal microorganisms that live below the water’s surface. The best time to experience it is during a new moon, when there is less light emitted from the sky, making the microorganisms more visible.

Hiking in the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge

Put on your hiking boots and hit the trails at the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. At over 18,000 acres, it is the largest wildlife reserve in the Caribbean. The refuge features some of the most beautiful beaches on the island. Plus, various trails meander throughout the wetland areas, one leading to a historic lighthouse.

Fort Count Mirasol Museum

Uncover a bit of history while sightseeing with a visit to the old Fort Count Mirasol. Built in 1845, Fort Count de Mirasol is a historic landmark located in the town of Isabel Segunda. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, the fort houses an extensive collection of documents and artifacts highlighting the history of Vieques, along with amazing views. Take a walk around the grounds and discover the remaining walls that were built to help protect the island, old wrought iron cannons, colorful rose gardens, and some of the best views of the island.
