If there is one thing Vieques is famous for, it’s our beautiful beaches! One of which is a favorite amongst guests at Hacienda Tamarindo – Playa Negrita, or rather the Vieques black sand beach. But before you head out, be sure to read our guide about visiting this secluded beach.
Why is it called “little black beach”
So, what is a black sand beach doing on an island with no volcanoes? For a while, locals didn’t even know it existed because why would there be a black sand beach. Named Playa Negrita or in English “Black Sand Beach,” this beach had been a hidden secret to many on the island until recently.
While there are no active volcanoes on the island, there are (what used to be) volcanic areas like Monte Pirata (the island’s highest peak) where there is volcanic material and sediment that is washed down through a quebrada (stream) during heavy rainstorms, ultimately ending up at the beach. So, if it hasn’t rained much prior to your visit, you might not see much of a black sandy beach.
How to access Playa Negrita
Like many of the Vieques beaches, Playa Negrita is remote and secluded, making it a favorite for those who are looking to avoid the crowds. Because of its off-the-beaten-path location, getting there isn’t the easiest but it’s completely accessible for those willing to put in a little effort.
If you’re looking for a day excursion, take the long way where you can start your walk from Esperanza Beach or Playa Grande. The scenic walk is much harder during high tide because you’ll have to walk across rocks vs. just sand, which isn’t really advisable. If you decide to make the walk, be sure to wear appropriate shoes that won’t slip and slide.
The other option is a bit easier and shorter. If you’re driving from Hacienda Tamarindo, head west on Route 997. At the end of the road, make a left towards La Hueca on Route 201. Follow the road until you reach the sign “Playa Negra.”
What to see
When you arrive after a good rain, you will see traces of black sediment mixed with the sand that look like a swirling work of art. In addition to the black sand beach, you’ll find beautifully shaped driftwood, rocky cliffs, and lush plants covering the cliffs behind you. Do note there is little to no shade so be sure to bring your hat and sunscreen.
